TODAY IN DESIGN 1913

A New Kind of Puzzle: The Birth of the Crossword.

On this day in 1913, the pages of the New York World featured something novel and engaging – the first published crossword puzzle. Created by journalist Arthur Wynne, this new form of entertainment captured the public's imagination and quickly became a beloved pastime.

Wynne's puzzle, originally termed a "word-cross," presented a simple yet intriguing grid of squares with clues to be solved vertically and horizontally. This innovative design not only provided intellectual stimulation but also a new way to play with words and language. It was a perfect blend of challenge, creativity, and fun.
