TODAY IN DESIGN → 1998

The iMac G3 goes on sale.

Designed by Jonathan Ive, the iMac's translucent, colorful, and egg-shaped design was a departure from the beige boxes typical of PCs of the era.

It played a significant role in Apple's revival in the late 1990s and early 2000s and had major influence on computer design trends thereafter—including GUI.

All 13 colors of the iMac G3. Inspired by colorful candy dispensers, the design features translucent plastic with a solid color backing allowing users to see the components of the machine inside.
